The fantasy city of Venice remains impossible for me to grasp, a city I have been to many times, a magical city that I love to visit and photograph.
There is just something magical and a timeless beauty about black and white photography.
Sure, I absolutley love shooting in color and I think it is great, but when I shoot in black and white the photo can bring a new aesthetic to my photographs that can’t be conveyed through colour.
Colours are great, but I find they can sometimes add distractions to my photos. With black and white photography those distracting colours are lost and allows you to see contrast, shapes and possibly emotion that may not have seen in the colour photo.
Both the black and white photographs on this page where edited in Adobe Lightroom using a VSCO Ilford HP5 black and white film simulation preset.
The portrait was taken in a practical session while doing a city and guilds in photography. With my final panel for the C&G I decided to go with black and white photography and used Valencia science park as the subject.
Some subjects only work when using Black and White photography, such as this beach scene in Agadir Morocco. The colour version of this photograph just doesnt look as dramatic as the black and white one.
